Importance of data management
Up-to-date and reliable information helps you make the right decisions. To form a picture of the importance of possibly improving data management within your organization, you can ask yourself a number of the following questions:
  • How sure are you of the timeliness and reliability of data on which you currently base your business decisions?
  • In case you are not so sure about this: what are the consequences if you base your conclusions on incorrect or outdated data?
  • Do you comply with the laws and regulations regarding working with privacy-sensitive data?
  • How is the security of your data guaranteed?
Increase of data
Can you easily extract information from a combination of data from operational systems? Examples include combining sales data with market data or combining production data with data from your HR system.
    Do you expect:
  • An increase or a decrease in the amount of available data in the coming years.
  • An increase or decrease in the demand for information.

Data warehouse
A data warehouse is a data management system aimed at providing insight into and overview of your data from underlying source systems. A data warehouse often provides support for analyzes in the field of Business Intelligence (BI). Data warehouses often contain large amounts of (historical) data, whereby data from different sources can be combined and made available in the form of logically related sets of processed data (data marts).

Typical functionalities that are completed by a data warehouse are the central management of definitions used with regard to data (Business Rules), the storage of historical data where the underlying systems lack the possibility for that data and the unburdening of operational systems when it comes to further data analysis. In summary, a data warehouse comprises a structured amount of data for specific use.

data lake

A data lake is a facility for storing large amounts of unstructured data. The big difference with a data warehouse is that in a data lake all data is stored unstructured. A data lake can store text files, databases, emails and many more types of data. The advantages associated with this unstructured form of storage lie in the fact that storing data in this way becomes particularly simple; no extensive editing is required before data can be saved. The other side of this coin is that if you want to use the data for other applications, you have to apply logic afterwards to interpret the data correctly.
